The majority of the population were dedicted to the pure task of surval. They had very little, and the scarceness of jobs forced many to alternative forms of acquiring food and shelter.
Despite the horrible conditions, or perhaps because of, many Americans went on strike. Such a strike was the Seattle Strike where the entire city if Seattle was shut down for 5 days due to a city-wide strike. The strik was eventually ended by the difficulty of living in a closed down city. Similar strikes occured throughout American, as unions fought for better working conditions, as well as increase in the amount of jobs.
